Gary Vaynerchuck Gives Practical Advice | Jab Jab Jab Right Hook His Best Book?

New York Times best-selling author Gary Vaynerchuk has just released a new book based on his views of how to properly use social media.

When I first heard about this new Gary Vaynerchuk book, I was quite excited. Year ago, when I first expressed an interest in getting involved in online marketing to my brother, who had been making a living as an internet marketer for 10 years, the first thing he did was give me a handful of books to read. One of these books was a thin little tome by some guy named Gary Vaynerchuk.

This book was Crush It. If you have heard of Gary V, it is likely due to this wonderful business book. It was a huge hit and was one of the first, and most powerful, novels that introduced the world to the power of social media. This story is a powerful read, Gary, is a great and natural storyteller. He tells his story and how social media transformed his life, and by doing so, gives his readers a road-map to use to transform their own lives and businesses.

Crush It was a hugely inspirational book in my life. If you have ever seen and heard Gary talk, but haven't read his books yet, maybe you can get an inkling of what I am talking about. Gary simply oozes passion and inspiration. You cannot help but get excited and pumped up, ready to conquer the world when you hear him talk, and the same goes for reading his books. He distills his passion onto the page.

Who is Gary Vaynerchuk?

Maybe you have not heard of Gary yet? If so let me give you a brief rundown. Gary was a Russian immigrant who came to the United States as a young boy. When he became an adult he took over his parents small liquor store and re-branded it to wine store. He then began to use social media and a daily video blog to promote the online aspect of his business and promote wine in general. To say this was a huge success would be an understatement. He quickly turned this small store into a 45 million dollar a year business, and his video blogs reach as large an audience as 90,000 people per episode. Quite a feat.

Gary is still growing in the social media world. He is an incredible speaker. He has three best-selling books. An he has been by reading his bio page and/or his personal website.

What is Jab Jab Jab, Right Hook About?

Like "Crush It" and Gary's second book, "The Thank You Economy" "Jab Jab Jab, Right Hook: How to tell your story in a noisy social world" is about using social media.

I feel that his first book is like an introductory "101" college course on social media. It gets you pumped up. It gives you some great background. It fills you in on the terms you need to know. It is the basics. As good as it is, there is not a lot of "practical" advice on how to actually do social media the right way in, "Crush It".

"Jab Jab" however takes off where "Crush It" left off. It is the "201" training in social media that many people have been waiting for for quite a long time. (I certainly know I have been). "Jab Jab" is chocked full of practical advice and actionable tips.

The core concept of Vaynerchuk's book is that most small businesses and marketers have been getting social media completely wrong. They just add to the "noise" of the internet and fail to stand out in a manner that is essential to success within social media.

But he doesn't stop there. He gives a boat load of specific examples of people who are doing social media the "right" way, as well as another huge collection of those who are doing it wrong.

This is the bulk of the book and what I really love. It is broken down into the specific platforms with tons of examples for each and every one. These actionable case studies show you RIGHT AWAY what you need to do to become better in your favorite social media platform and why some platforms may work better for you than others depending upon your business.

With specific advice for Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and Tumblr this book should be required reading for anyone using these platforms for their business.

What does the title of "Jab Jab Jab, Right Hook" mean?

Vaynerchuk is a passionate guy. Boxing is a passionate sport. But with both boxing and Gary V. there is also a lot of strategy and thought behind the passion and action. We see the good stuff, but behind the scenes there is all sorts of thinking going on.

One of the core concepts of the book is the difference between "Jabs" and "Hooks" in most peoples approaches to social media.

"Jabs" are content designed to build relationships. It is all about connection. Valuable content. Engagement. Connection. It adds nothing to a bottom line. Sells nothing. But it builds that loyal audience and sets them up for the right hook.

"Right Hooks" is the simple description for content meant to convert and sell. It could be as simple as a "buy now" link, like the orange one above, or as complex as a perfectly designed infographic designed to drive customers to an opt-in page.

Vaynerchuk's core philosophy is that many people on social media may be good at jabs, but cannot connect with a right hook, or simply throw too many right hooks and are easily avoided.

Hopefully, you have gotten a few good "jabs" of information from this article, so here is my "right hook". Are you interested in this book? Why not click on the orange, "buy now" button to find out more. Enjoy!

CRUSH IT!
CRUSH IT!

If you know very little about social media and it's potential, this is a book for you. Gary Vaynerchuck tells his story, and reveals all of the exciting potential of social media in this classic 2009 book.

This book should be required reading for anyone who want to make their business grow through the use of social media

The Thank You Economy (Enhanced Edition)
The Thank You Economy (Enhanced Edition)

Crush it! Was the basic's of Social Media.

"Jab Jab" is the practical "How to" for growing your social media.

This book is more of a philosophical treatise on how and why social media works.

Don't get me wrong. This is a great book, and one I really enjoyed, but more from a "that's interesting" perspective rather than an "OMG, I never thought of that" manner that his first and third book brought out in me

Gary Vaynerchuk is a very good writer. But he is simply an ARTIST when it comes to talking.

His speeches are phenomenal. In the videos below I have found a couple choices for your enjoyment.

Here are four of his great speeches, including one of my favorites, an open forum question and answer session where an audience member drills him with the question of, "What the ROI on social media?" and Gary snaps back, "What is the ROI of your mother?" and launches into one of the best explanations on how essential both a mother and social media can be to success.

Truly classic. Just a word of warning, though. Gary does use some foul language in his speeches, so be prepared for 1-2 "F" bombs.

@anonymous: The title threw me a little at first too. I know Gary V and what he writes about, but I wasn't sure if he had jumped genres when I first saw the title.

@PaigSr: It is certainly not for everyone, but for those that are trying to "work" social media the "right way", there is certainly a lot of gems you can learn.

Hmm great LOTD! I would have ignored this book based on the title alone, but now you have me interested in what he really knows. I think his language could be costing him even more success!

@Dressage Husband: Thanks Stephen. HE certainly knows what he is talking about, talking from a proven success record.

I am not sure about his rough language hurting or helping his success. He surely loses some fans because of it, but I think he gains just as many for being "real" and "passionate".

Hard to say, but his slightly salty lingo is now a part of his "brand"

Congrats on LotD! I was given this book as a Christmas present, and am in the middle of reading it. Being involved in wine I've known of Gary's wine related videos for years, they were so successful. He's a master at marketing via the social networks - we've got a lot to learn from him.

Somethin worth looking into. Congratulations on getting LotD!

It's amazing that I see your post on this book. I had hired a mentor to work with me over last month and he recommended this same book "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook" So something tells me I may need to get serious and get this book!

I am about to do a review of Chris Brogan/Julien Smith's "Impact Equation"....not as timely since that one came out in 2012. I can't wait to watch all these videos. I am not wine drinker but I love Gary V.

Not only is the book great, I highly recommend that if you get the chance to see him live, DO IT. His passion is infectious and the way he is able to break each platform down and explain why they are important is fantastic.
